Helping Entrepreneurs Succeed: Ron Conway

by Scott Edward Walker on November 29th, 2012

To Our Clients & Friends: Welcome to our weekly series “Helping Entrepreneurs Succeed.”  Each week, we post a favorite video of a successful entrepreneur, investor or business leader on a variety of topics.  This week, we present Ron Conway, the founder of SV Angel and a brilliant investor, who is commonly referred to as the “Godfather of Silicon Valley”.

In this interesting interview by Paul Graham from about one month ago (courtesy of the Startup School), Ron shares some fascinating stories about Google, Facebook and Twitter, and the following solid nuggets for entrepreneurs:

  • “You have to have determination and conviction”;
  • “You have to be a leader”;
  • “I still think we’re in the infancy on the internet. I’ve been saying this since 1994, and I believe it more than ever”;
  • “Investors look for pattern recognition, which in this business is a mistake”;
  • “Never, never argue with the metrics”;
  • “Growth is the lifeblood of innovation”;
  • “We invest in people with personality and drive, who know it’s 24-7”;
  • “You have to be completely fearless”; and
  • You have to be “product focused” – because “if the product is good, you’ll have a happy customer.”

I hope you enjoy it.  Cheers, Scott
